ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mary Prince (1788–after 1833) was born at Brackish Pond in Bermuda to an enslaved family of African descent, then sold at the age of twelve. After a succession of owners, Prince ended up in London, where she worked in the household of Thomas Pringle, an abolitionist writer and secretary to the Anti-Slavery Society. Encouraged by Pringle to have her personal account transcribed, Prince published The History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave, which was instrumental in galvanizing public sentiment against slavery. In 2012, Mary Prince was recognized as a National Hero of Bermuda.
